Picking the Right Color for Your Roof

When getting a new roof there’s a few things you’ll have to choose. Who your contractor is, what type of material and shingle style you want, and also the color. When choosing your color, you might just go with blue or brown as those are some of the most common colors, but it’s important to keep in mind the color scheme of your homes exterior. Depending on the color of your siding, there are a few routes you could go with the color of your new roof. Another thing to keep in mind is where you are located. If you reside in a warmer area with lots of humidity and sun, then a lighter roof color might be better for you since it won’t retain as much heat. If you reside in an area with lots of forest surrounding your home, then darker shingles might be better, and if you reside where there’s lots of open space and tons of bright colors then a lighter colored or more medium toned shingle will probably look the best!

Dark Shingles with Light Siding

If you have lighter colored siding then going with a darker colored shingle can create a nice contrast between the roof and the house. This would look best on a two+ story homes as it can help draw the eyes upwards and make your home seem spacious and grand. When used on a smaller home with lighter siding, the home can come off as smaller than it actually is.

Light Shingles with Dark Siding

Like mentioned above, if you have a darker siding then getting lighter shingles will also create a contrast for your home. This color choice is a classic and timeless option, and has been quite popular for many decades.

Dark Shingles with Dark Siding

If you don’t like the contrast look of dark/light, then you might be interested in the dark/dark color scheme. Monochromatic exterior design was very popular in the 90’s and is recently gaining traction again. If you want your exterior to stand out as trendy and cool, then this might be the right color scheme for you!

Light Roof and Light Siding

If you like the monochromatic look but don’t like the dark/dark colors, then light shingles and light siding are for you!

MultiColored Shingles

If you are having a rough time choosing between light or dark shingles, no matter your siding, try checking out some different multi-colored shingles! Since they are a blend of both dark and light shingles you get the best of both worlds and they look great on most homes! Just ask your contractor to provide you some samples of different multi-colored shingles so you can compare them against your siding!

At the end of the day, it’s all about personal taste (and possibly your HOA!) so go with whatever you feel makes your home yours. Like mentioned above, a good way to test out different colors for your roof would be to get samples of the different colored shingles and place them by your siding! This can give you the best idea of how a certain color will look with your home. Be sure to do it during different times of the day, too, as the lighting from the sun might alter the way the shingles look.

If you still are unsure of what to pick, ask your contractor! They have seen and done hundreds of thousands of roofs over the years and should be able to help you pick out something that will compliment your home!
